Mr. Leonard Douglas Harwell, Jr., also known as Doug, is a humble servant leader who is loyal, wise, compassionate, and tenacious. He is the most qualified choice to lead the Mobile County Commission District 2.

Doug is a native and lifelong resident of Mobile County. He has devoted his time, effort, and energy to making Mobile County a better place to live. He has served nearly 12 years on the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners District 1, serves on the Mobile Sports Authority Board, and has served many years as the President of Semmes Youth Baseball. He has been a devoted husband to Sandy for 33 years, a gracious father to three adult sons and two daughters-in-law, and a proud Poppa D to two amazing grandchildren. In addition, he has served in the leadership of his Christian church for nearly three decades, and he gives back to his community with his time and financial resources. Doug is a loyal county resident with goals to move Mobile County forward.

Doug is a wise person and successful businessman. He visionary plans for what Mobile County could be, and he prepares incessantly building the foundation to get to those goals. He is keenly aware that relationships and partnerships are required to accomplish major goals. Doug’s investments in people and relationships form the foundation for his vision for the county. He knows change only happens with the support of citizens and governmental leaders to make it happen.

Doug is a compassionate man. Whether it is giving a twenty to the guy down on his luck at the gas station, buying a corporate table at a fundraiser, or supporting charities for underprivileged and disabled children, he is always offering a hand-up to those in need. And most importantly, he does so without any need for recognition.

Doug is tenacious in what he believes. He believes in Christianity; he believes that marriage and family are a blessing; he believes in hard work; he believes in the future of Mobile County. Doug has moved from being an hourly worker at Mobile Area Water and Sewer Services to a successful business owner at Harwell & Company. Hard work, preparation, and planning have gotten him to this point, and he pledges to do the same for Mobile County.
