Elect Doug Harwell to Mobile County Commission
Goals
As Mobile County Commissioner for District 2, I have established numerous goals to address unique infrastructure needs of a wide variety of urban, suburban and rural communities.
-
I will offer leadership to provide safe communities.
-
I will support excellent public education.
-
I will explore relationships and partnerships to develop more affordable housing options.
-
I will plan for the construction of more efficient roads and more reliable utilities.
-
I will support the continued development of industries who provide job opportunities and job training.
Relationships
By strengthening current relationships and building future partnerships, I will be better able to address vital Mobile County and District 2 goals.
-
I am a lifelong resident of Mobile County. My roots are in Mobile County. My family and I are graduates of the public school system and we’ve established our lives and careers here. I have seen many changes in the county over the past five decades and by leading family, friends and constituents I believe I am the one to build the foundation to sustain the county for the next 50 years.
-
I am the owner of Harwell & Company, a road construction contractor. I have deep ties to the road construction business in Mobile County and I will use these connections to better address dangerous intersections, traffic, roads and bridges. Time saved from commutes can be time added to family activities.
-
I worked in the public utilities sector in Mobile County for many years. My work connections in this industry will assist in planning future industrial and residential growth which requires access to water, gas, sewer, electricity, telephone and internet service.
-
I have served nearly 12 years on the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners. I have excellent relationships with board members, principals, teachers, support staff employees and Central Office leaders. I have a strong working knowledge of the career and technical education programs in our schools that create pathways for well- trained students to become a skilled workforce. We can keep our graduates here in Mobile County with good paying jobs.
-
I have served for several years on the Mobile Sports Authority Board. Working on this Board has connected me to a cross-section of leaders from our community. It has better prepared me to support recreation opportunities available to the citizens of Mobile County and visitors.
-
In addition, I have positive working relationships with local law enforcement and fire service agencies. These relationships allow for improved responsiveness to community safety issues.
Opportunities
I will prioritize well-planned economic development that will result in the improvement of quality-of-life opportunities available to Mobile County citizens.
-
I will always be on the lookout for ways Mobile County can grow, but it is very important to me that growth is well-planned and intelligently implemented. We have wonderful job opportunities in Downtown Mobile, from Austal to Airbus to the Mobile International Airport. However, as District 2 Commissioner, I know that many of my constituents from Citronelle/Chunchula/Georgetown, south to the Baker/Seven Hills/Tanner Williams, and east to Spring Hill/Cottage Hill/Knollwood, have a very hard time getting through frustrating traffic each morning and evening to reach these opportunities. It’s time we plan and build infrastructure to handle the growth of businesses and neighborhoods.
-
Safe communities are critical to quality of life and community growth. Increased crime deters the development of new communities and new industries looking to locate in the county. It’s time we give our utmost support to our local law enforcement, the court system, Mobile Metro Jail and the mental health system. With proper funding and support for these agencies, our communities and quality of life will continue to improve.
Workforce
Workers as the heart of the community who make Mobile County a unique and enjoyable place to live. I will continue to recognize, support and celebrate our productive workforce.
-
I applaud all workers in the county who are gainfully employed. Each of them contributes to a successful community.
-
I appreciate all workers in the county; from those who construct world-class ships at Austal, to those who bring more sidewalks to Spring Hill, to those who teach our schoolchildren, and to those who collect our trash.
-
I pledge to always be accessible, caring and helpful to the workers in our community. I want the doers, the givers, the volunteers and the agents of change to tell me what is working, and what we can do better.
